Treasures on Earth

It is so easy for us to be captivated and controlled by the world we live in. The spirit of consumerism, pleasure, and “easy living” seems to control most of our lives. Even the church of today has been overrun by the mentality of “prosperity gospel” and amassing great fortunes during our lifetimes. Huge cathedrals and religious schools are built while those who occupy them hold little regard for feeding the poor and hungry or providing for widows, orphans, or prisoners. How many poor, widows, orphans, or prisoners do you personally know and help?

The folly of man is to think we control ANYTHING. Even some Christians now think they can make demands on God and expect to be delivered from hardship, pestilence, and disease upon their decree. While clearly, God does deliver His people from many things at times and over time, it is also clear that He does what He will in His time and for His purposes…not because WE demand it.

On top of all this, we now have people and their governments claiming they are going to control the climate, create economic prosperity equally for all, and basically bring peace to the world via One World governance. I have news from the Bible that is not really news at all. This whole world is going to burn and be replaced by a new heaven and earth. We see this in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. Thus I have to question how true Christian believers can get so caught up and worried about “climate change”, earthquakes, fires, or “world wars” and the devastation they are causing when we have known for thousands of years what the plan is for this fallen world via God’s revelations in the Bible.

It is time for believers to decide what they are going to believe, how they are going to act, and why. All of these decisions should be based on the Holy Spirit and the Word of God leading us into all truth. You will not get the truth from mainstream media. You will not get the truth from newspapers or unspiritual books and blogs. Our truth is found in rightly dividing the Bible as our word of truth. Everything else will fade away or be burnt up…but His word will not return to Him void or ineffective. It is what HE has declared that counts.

The positions of the Bible are no less expedient today than they were when written as the Holy Spirit spoke through men.

Matthew 6:19-21
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

2 Peter 3:7
“…the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.”

1 John 2:15-17
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”
So, based on these few of many passages saying the same thing…why would a Christian be worried or fearful about what is happening in the world? Why would we focus much time or energy on building up financial security or images of “success”?  When will we become willing to lay down our lives, pick up our cross, and follow Jesus as He has called us to do?
I don’t think this means we don’t work or build up enough resources to sustain ourselves during these short lives on planet Earth, but it is about our motivation and intent for doing so. Money is not “evil” in and of itself. It is the LOVE of money that is the root of all evil. It is counting on money more than God to sustain you in this life that is sin. If God owns us and our money…it doesn’t matter how much or little you have. HE will sustain you…or allow you to freely give and bless other people with less. It is not evil to be blessed financially, but it is unBiblical to think YOU produced it for YOUR purposes.
Believe me, I have wasted decades in the pursuit of pleasure and wealth. I can honestly say that I have never cared about money in and of itself, but it was about the pride of “keeping score” on what I have done or invested in. That is what secular humanists do. The great change in my life has been about my motivations and responsibility based on what God blesses me with. Every breath I have, every good or productive idea, every opportunity that comes my way…all come from His bountiful grace and mercy. If not for that I would have been born in the poorest most violent circumstances that so many billions are born into. I am no better than those billions who are lost or penniless.
It is time for Christians everywhere, but especially American Christians, to check where and for what they are laying up treasures in their lives. The body of Christ has many parts. Some are meant to provide financially for others as a ministry. Others are meant to sacrifice financial pursuits because they are called to be ministers, evangelists, or simply feed the hungry. What is your role in the body of Christ, THE church? If you can’t take it with you, why strive for more than you need?  What are the roots of your desiring MORE…a bigger house, a newer car, or eating/drinking the most expensive options out there? I can assure you that “taste” is not about how expensive something is. Do you think God owes you something? No, we owe HIM everything. Unfortunately, most of the churches full of people today are those looking to get something from God. Churches that preach sacrifice, giving, and holiness are disappearing rapidly which again was predicted in the Bible.
We should clearly see that judgment is coming (or is here), and it begins at the “household of God”. What are your greatest treasures…and are you ready to give it ALL for the cause of the gospel and your love for Jesus Christ?
1 Peter 4:17
“For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?”
